The University of Szeged has been ranked at the top of the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities for a decade. As in previous years, this year the institution was ranked 601-700th. With this result, the University of Szeged is in a tie for first place among Hungarian institutions.

The latest, 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) - published first in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University – is now out. The ranking has been produced by an independent organisation, ShanghaiRanking, since 2009. The ranking - better known as the Shanghai Ranking - has been recognised for many years by higher education professionals as one of the most reliable assessments.

The University of Szeged is now ranked 601-700th, a position it has held for the third year in a row. In a domestic comparison, the Szeged institution is in a tie for first place.

All top ten positions of the ranking are taken by American universities. Harvard has held the leading position for 18 years, followed by Stanford and Cambridge, both of which have also held the same positions. The experts have assessed the academic performance of more than 2,690 higher education institutions to select the top 1,000 universities. The ranking was based on 6 indicators, including the professional recognition of teachers, researchers and alumni (number of Nobel and Fields Prize winners), publication output, citation rate and academic output per capita.

The University of Szeged also scored well in the ARWU subject rankings published in July: in physics, the institution achieved a ranking of 301-400. In terms of clinical medicine, the institution was ranked 401-500.
